Former Manchester United midfielder and current pundit Paul Scholes has suggested only two signings are required for United to reach the levels of Liverpool and Manchester City.
United legend Scholes believes Man Utd are not very far from challenging for the title as it once seemed. United continued with their terrific form yesterday after thrashing Bournemouth 5-2 at home. It was another stellar performance from the team, which indicated how much the team has improved in the past few months. Scholes advised United to make two signings, a centre-forward and a centre-back to supplement Maguire.
Speaking on BBC Radio Five ( via Goal.com ), Scholes said : " I really don't think they are a million miles away. I know we spoke about four or five players but I think it's two or three now. I think you are looking at a centre-forward, a really classy goal scorer and possibly a centre half to play next to Maguire. I think Lindelöf has done alright but I just think Maguire with his lack of pace at times [ can get caught].
" If he's got a really dominant centre-half next to him like a Rio Ferdinand or Jaap Stam, who bullies centre-forwards, I think that would be a big help to the team."
Indeed, we need a striker who has got a knack of scoring goals and ease the burden off Martial, Rashford and Greenwood. Ighalo, he is here only on loan and will leave in January. So yeah, signing a centre forward is a must. Again, I won't agree with buying a centre back to partner Maguire as that would be an insult to the great work put up by Lindelöf this season. Lindelöf is the right guy to partner Maguire and we are well stocked in central defence with Bailly and Tuanzebe there, who are really good. Yes we may need a centre back in numbers as there are only four capable ones and Phil Jones expected to be sold next season along with Smalling. So for filling up that role why look far away, and look at an academy player in Teden Mengi. He has already started to train with the first team and should be given a chance to impress. Hope we sign the right missing links and be back challenging for the major honours as things look really promising at the moment.
